Description

1809 JR-1 Dime, MS64
First Year of Issue; Scarce in Mint State

1809 10C JR-1, High R.3, MS64 NGC. Blazing, untoned surfaces scintillate with significant mint luster atop unmarked surfaces. Strike is exquisite, with nearly all details fully imparted. Unlike the 1796 dimes and quarters, the Bust dime's first year of issue was not saved in disproportionate numbers, with a survival rate similar to that of the much higher mintage issues of 1805 and 1807. These coins also made their way directly into circulation, making high grade examples even more difficult to locate today. A look through our archives shows only two auction results from the last five years: one from 2023 and another from 2025. Population data bears out this scarcity, with the NGC Census revealing just five certifications in 64, bested only by 3 in 64+ and 4 in 65 (10/25).
