    Description

1809 10C XF40 Light Obverse Scratch Uncertified. JR-1, the only known variety of the year, R.4. Even though the 1809 was the first year of a new type, very little hoarding occurred and today it is quite unusual to find anything other than an occasional low grade example of this date. The surfaces on this totally original coin are medium gray with subtle yellow-gold undertones. There is modest wear on the highpoints and the only negative feature (which is only a slight one) is a short, ancient scratch from the obverse rim between 11 and 12 o'clock to the cap. Anyone who has looked for this scarce early dime for any length of time knows that waiting for a nice, original gray XF without any distractions could easily stretch out for months or even years. (NGC ID# 236U, PCGS# 4486)
