    Description

Early Die State XF45 1811/09 Dime

1811/09 10C JR-1, R.3. Reiver state a. XF45 NGC. Dark gray with even darker highlights in the fields. Boldly struck by the dies and reasonably attractive for this date. The surfaces are very clean, and rarely are found so well preserved on these small early silver coins.
This is a very early die state for the 1811 dime, the obverse held up well for the entire issue with a single die crack seen to the 8 in the date on later die states, but the reverse is usually found shattered. First used to coin the entire 51,065 pieces dated 1809, the reverse was again employed in 1811 to coin an additional 65,180 pieces. Few dies from this period survived to strike anything approaching 100,000 coins, and this reverse die shattered early during the production of 1811 coinage. On this particular coin there is a faint die crack which arcs down through the A in STATES to the eagle's head and wing, and out the rim through the right foot of the R in AMERICA. Another faint die crack extends horizontally through the final A of AMERICA to the eagle's right wing tip and claw. A final die crack is seen from the rim down through the first A of AMERICA into the scroll. These cracks are all in the early stage of development, as compared to the extensive die cracks found on the later die states of this issue.
