    Description

    1814 Large Date Dime, JR-3, MS65+

1814 10C Large Date, JR-3, R.2, MS65+ PCGS. On the obverse, the left edge of the lowest hair curl aligns with the right side of the second 1 in the date. The reverse shows the second T in STATES left of the I in PLURIBUS, and there is no period after 10 C.

Capped Bust dimes were struck sporadically; only three years, 1809, 1811, and 1814, were struck before 1820, when productions became more-or-less yearly (save 1826). The JR-3 is a fairly available variety (while still elusive so fine as here) and one of the four Large Date variants for the year; but all five of the 1814 varieties are more easily located, especially in high grade, than the 1809 and 1811 dates, each known from single die pairings. This MS65+ JR-3 is dove-gray with dabs of russet around the rims and some splashy light orange on the reverse. Extensive die clashing is typical; stars 3 and 8 connect to the rim via small die cracks. Numerous other cracks and clashes appear on the reverse, particularly within the shield. The strike is adequate overall, although notable softness shows at the bottom-right wingtip and CA of AMERICA nearby. (NGC ID# 236W, Variety PCGS# 38775, Base PCGS# 4488)
