Description

1814 JR-3 Dime, MS66
One of the Finest Known

1814 10C Large Date, JR-3, R.2, MS66 NGC. The well-preserved, lustrous surfaces show highlights of lavender, ice-blue, and lime-green toning. This delightful Premium Gem exhibits well-detailed design elements, with die cracks on the reverse and dramatic clash marks on both sides. Eye appeal is terrific. The 1814 Capped Bust dime claims a mintage of 421,500 pieces and five die marriages that are split into three types. The JR-1 is the sole Small Date variety for the year, with all four others sporting the Large Date logotype. JR-5 is the famous STATESOFAMERICA variety, so called since these three words on the reverse run together as if a single word. Among the remaining three Large Date varieties, the present JR-3 differentiates itself by having no period in the denomination and the second 1 in the date aligned with the left edge of the lowest curl. The JR-3 is a relatively available variety, in the context of the series, but examples in MS66 condition are rare and finer coins are virtually unobtainable. A massive increase in NGC's MS66 population from one to seven certifications since our last sale of this example six years ago suggests significant resubmissions. Census: 7 in 66, 1 finer (10/25).
