    1814 Small Date Dime, JR-1, MS64
    Essential Guide Book Variety

    1814 10C Small Date, JR-1, R.3, MS64 NGC. Nicely preserved surfaces are slate-gray in the center with walnut accents near the rims and traces of aqua on the high points. There are few signs of contact, but the upper stars flanking Liberty on each side are flatly struck. Signs of die clashing appear below the bust on the obverse and above the eagle on the reverse.

    Variety: Small Date, JR-1, R.3. The sole Small Date among the five 1814 varieties, although one can distinguish between the Small Date and Large Date obverses merely be checking the size of the 8 in the date. The reverse shows the bottom-left serif of the last S in STATES between the US in PLURIBUS.

    Population Data (3/15): For the Small Date JR-1 variety, NGC shows 10 MS64, four MS65, and one MS67. PCGS reports three MS64, two MS65, and one MS66+.

    Heritage Commentary: The 1814 Small Date is essential for Guide Book variety collectors. Neither the obverse nor the reverse die was reused in the dime series. The certified populations are almost certainly inflated due to resubmissions.
