Description

1820 JR-13 Dime, MS65
Probably Finest of the Variety

1820 10C Large 0, JR-13, R.3, MS65 NGC. Steel-blue, russet-brown, and silver intersperse to create a stunning original patina. The design is well-centered, and strike is strong, with slight weakness on the highest obverse curls and no loss of definition on the reverse wings. Three punches were used for the zero in the date, leading to three distinct types. The Small 0 was used on JR-1 through 3, the Medium 0 can be found on JR-4 through 7 and 10 through 12 (though PCGS classifies this as the Small 0 type), and the Large 0 is present on JR-8, 9, and 13. The JR-13, with its R.3 rarity rating, is one of the more available die marriages of the year.

This superlative survivor is pedigreed to the incredible Eliasberg collection, selling in 1996 alongside other superlative coins like each type of 1793 cent, 1794 half dimes, and 1796 dimes. While not as rare as those issues overall, the present offering has an important characteristic with these other Early U.S. coins: it is one of the finest known examples of its type. No finer examples of JR-13 are likely known, and over the date as a whole, just five certifications in 66, one in 67, and one in 67★ are known, making the present offering one of the finest known examples at the date level as well. Specialists and type collectors alike will find this coin a welcome addition to their sets.
