Extraordinary MS68 1820 Dime--The Finest Known For Both the Date and the Capped Bust Type

1820 10C Large 0 MS68 PCGS. JR-9, R.4. An exquisite Large Size Bust dime, this piece is not only the finest piece known for the JR-9 variety but is also the finest known for the date as well as the highest graded coin of the type. The dominant theme of this amazing coin is its exceptional mint luster. Bright and frosted, it rolls around the surfaces unimpeded by any obvious or distracting abrasions. The only ripple on the surface of the coin is faint die clashing in the fields. Speaking of fields, the obverse has bright mint frost throughout, while the reverse fields are semi-prooflike. Just a bit softly struck on the central devices, as usual for coins from this period. The interior portions of each side are brilliant and framed at the margins by deep blue and golden-brown patina. A couple of proofs are known of this date (although none have been certified). These are the only pieces we can think of that compare in rarity and desirability to this magnificent specimen. The existence of this coin, however, is even more remarkable than that of a proof as proofs were specially made coins that tend to be preserved over the years in high grades. This piece was struck to enter circulation. It never did though, but what is even more remarkable is the special care that was obviously lavished upon this coin over the past 183 years. A pristine Large Size dime in unsurpassable condition. (#4492) (NGC ID# 236X, PCGS# 4492)
