    Description

    1822 JR-1 Dime, Attractive AU58
    Ex: Winsor, Eliasberg

1822 10C JR-1, R.4, AU58 PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg. The pedigree of this piece can be traced to the 19th century, when it was offered in the Chapman brothers' sale of the Richard B. Winsor Collection. The catalog described it as "Extremely fine" and "Extremely rare." By modern grading standards, this coin is firmly an AU58, and much luster remains in the fields. Russet, sea-green, and warm golden toning blankets each side. The lower stars exhibit the only discernible strike weakness.

The 1822 dime had a small mintage of 100,000 pieces from a single die pair. Examples are scarce in all grades today and genuinely rare in the upper AU and Mint State levels. A near-Mint coin such as this is a rare sighting at auction. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 6 in 58, 6 finer (8/17).
    Ex: Richard B. Winsor Collection (S.H. and H. Chapman, 12/1895), lot 675, which realized $42.00; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/1996), lot 1070. (NGC ID# 236Z, Variety PCGS# 38801, Base PCGS# 4497)
