    1822 Capped Bust Dime, MS64
    Underrated Key, JR-1

1822 10C JR-1, R.4, MS64 NGC. The 1822 is the unheralded key date among Capped Bust dimes, and the consensus among series specialists is that 200 to 250 pieces survive in all grades. Mint records indicate a production of 100,000 coins, but Walter Breen noted in his Encyclopedia that those mostly consisted of 1821s. The recently published Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide by Zack, Scuderi, and Sherrill adds that the actual mintage "is likely as little as a quarter of what Mint records report ... The majority of 1822's known are in grades of VG or lower and many are damaged. Fewer than 30 examples are known in VF or better, including about ten in MS."

Golden-gray and olive tones shroud each side, enhanced by luminous original mint luster throughout this near-Gem 1822 dime. The design elements are well-struck overall with faint centers evident on the upper stars. Liberty's hair curls are boldly delineated, as are the dentils on the obverse and reverse. The fletchings are clear, and veins appear on several olive leaves. A handful of small marks are entirely unimportant relative to the significance and conditional rarity of this top-quality key date. Census: 2 in 64 (1 in 64 ), 3 finer (6/16). (NGC ID# 236Z, Variety PCGS# 38801, Base PCGS# 4497)
