    Description

    1822 JR-1 Dime, MS64
    Key Capped Bust Date
Sole Example in This Grade at PCGS

1822 10C JR-1, R.4, MS64 PCGS. Only a single die pair is known for the entire calendar-year mintage of 100,000 dimes for 1822. The date is low, and star 1 nearly touches the bust. On the reverse, the serif on the digit 1 in the denomination is thin, "defective" as the dime book authors put it.

As a single-variety year -- the last among the Capped Bust dimes -- the 1822 date is a key entry in the series, and an issue always in hot demand from specialists. This near-Gem is far and away finer than most certified examples, which average between VF30 and VF35 at the leading services. This piece boasts appealing rose-gold patina throughout each side. A single stray mark on Liberty's cheek is the sole mentionable contact, and it is minor. A couple of the peripheral stars lack central detail, but the strike overall is pleasing. This opportunity to obtain a high-Mint State 1822 dime is one that occurs seldom; although NGC reports six examples of the date (possibly including duplicates) In MS64 or finer, this is the sole PCGS example in this grade, and only two are finer -- one each in MS65 and MS66, the latter attributed as a JR-1. Our last offering of an MS64 or finer example was an NGC MS64 Star-graded coin in our Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2009), lot 2231, which realized $25,300. This piece should certainly set a recent record for the date and grade. (NGC ID# 236Z, Variety PCGS# 38801, Base PCGS# 4497)
