    Description

Original Condition Census 1823/2 Bust Dime

1823/2 10C Small Es MS 66 NGC. JR-1, R.3. The JR-1 marriage is the second scarcest die variety of the 1823 dime after the JR-2. According to the authors of the book Early United States Dimes: 1796-1837, the finest known example of this variety is an MS 67 coin that includes among its pedigree the Menjou Sale (Numismatic Gallery, 6/50) and the Bareford Sale (Stack's, 10/81). We do not know whether or not this is the same coin, but at the very least it is a strong rival to the Menjou/Bareford specimen in terms of technical quality. The obverse is boldly defined in all areas. The reverse, while somewhat soft over the eagle's portrait, is also above average in execution for the series. The smooth, frosty surfaces glisten beneath rich charcoal-copper toning. Brighter rose and golden undertones are noted at select angles. This coin is one of only two 1823/2 dimes to receive an MS 66 grade from both NGC and PCGS, and it is bettered by none (7/00). (NGC ID# 2372, PCGS# 4498)
