Finest Known 1830/29 Dime, MS67 With a Prooflike Obverse

1830/29 10C MS67 PCGS. JR-5, R.2. One of only two overdates from 1830, this variety is characterized by ME being distant and ER close. Because of the lateness of this die state, most of the evidence of the underdigit from 1829 is no longer apparent. This piece shows all the die cracks listed in the JR reference: rim over star 10 through the outer points of stars 10 to 13, rim through 0 into the field toward star 13, between inner points of star 11 and star 12, rim to star 8, rim over cap to headband at Y. However, an even later die state is known for this variety with a die cud that joins three denticles over the cap.
This piece shows both the extensive use of this die pairing as well as the attempt to extend die life even further. The fields, especially the obverse fields, are bright and highly reflective. They were obviously polished as the die was beginning to show wear. However, the numerous die cracks and lack of highpoint detail show that this die's days were numbered. The surfaces are remarkably well preserved with virtually unmarked fields and devices. Each side is also beautifully toned with speckled iridescence on the obverse and more uniform bright golden coloration on the reverse. The mint frost is especially apparent on the figure of Liberty as it stands in stark contrast against the deeply mirrored fields on that side. The JR reference (1984) mentions that three Uncirculated coins are known of this variety, the finest the authors were aware of was an MS60 from a 1973 transaction. This Superb coin is surely the finest example known of this popular overdate.(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 237A, PCGS# 4519)
