    Description

    1833 JR-3 Dime, AU Details
Rare Variety, John Reich Plate Coin

1833 10C JR-3, R.6 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NCS. AU Details. Ex: Jules Reiver Collection. The surfaces of this coin were once cleaned with resulting hairlines over the surfaces, and Liberty's cap shows fine scratches that are best seen with a loupe. Bright silver throughout, the coin shows a hint of gold starting to form around the periphery. Some luster remains in the protected areas, and this offsets the visual effects of the cleaning to a degree. Boldly struck by the dies, with sharp stars and curls on the obverse, and the reverse displays full definition on the eagle's claws and wings. A die crack over the final A of AMERICA extends down the right leg of the A to the arrowheads, curling back to the rim forming a retained internal cud. Most examples of this variety show the retained cud to some degree. The reverse die was replaced after very few pieces were coined, creating one of the most elusive die pairings in the entire Capped Bust dime series. On balance, this is a clearly acceptable coin for the rare variety despite the problems mentioned, and it ranks high in the Condition Census for the die pair. It has served collectors for many years as the 1833 JR-3 plate coin in the John Reich dime book.
Ex: Milford Coin Company (1947); Allen F. Lovejoy; Stack's Lovejoy Sale (October 1990); The Jules Reiver Collection, Volume III (Heritage, 1/2006), lot 22253 which realized $4,888.
