    Description

Probable Finest Known 1834 JR-5 Capped Bust Dime in MS66

1834 10C Large 4 MS66 PCGS. JR-5, R.1. A later die state, the obverse and reverse cracks that the John Reich Collectors Society describes for this variety in the 1984 book Early United States Dimes: 1796-1837 are well advanced. The state is not so late, however, as to have developed an obverse cud at the base of the date. Although this a common die marriage of the 1834 Dime in an absolute sense, the John Reich Collectors Society had not seen an example finer than MS63. This frosty textured Gem displays delicate, mottled, golden-tan highlights in select peripheral areas. Every device is crisply detailed, and the surfaces are silent on the subject of distracting blemishes. PCGS reports only three 1834 Large 4 Dimes of all die marriages at the MS66 level, and none finer (10/02). (NGC ID# 237E, PCGS# 4526)
