    Description

Wonderfully Original 1834 Dime, Rare JR-2 (Large 4) Variety

1834 10C Large 4 MS 64 PCGS. JR-2, R.5. The insert incorrectly labels this coin as a Small 4 example. There does not appear to be any reason why this coin is not in an MS 65 holder. The surfaces are free of mentionable abrasions, the strike is bold in all of the critical areas, and there is appreciable cartwheel luster at most angles. Rich antique-copper toning envelops both sides with crimson accents around the reverse rim.
This is a rare die marriage that is markedly more difficult to locate than JR-1, JR-5, JR-6, and JR-7. According to the John Reich Collector's Society (1984), at least 12 examples of the JR-2 variety are extant in grades above the Fine 15 level. The finest known representative (at that time) was an MS 65 coin that Stack's sold on August 29, 1979. We do not know whether the present coin is the same as that specimen or a newly discovered example. Either way, it is undoubtedly Condition Census for the variety. (NGC ID# 237E, PCGS# 4526)

    Weight: 2.70 grams
