    Description

    1837 JR-4 Capped Bust Dime, MS66
    From the Pittman Collection

1837 10C JR-4, R.1, MS66 NGC. Ex: Pittman. A bisecting obverse die crack between 12 and 5 o'clock identifies the variety. Frosty luster shines through the beautiful rainbow toning with light silver devices. The obverse has light gold at the centers, changing to deeper gold, violet, russet, and cobalt-blue at the border. Reddish-gold at the central reverse changes to blue-green and gold at the border. The visual effect of the toning on this Premium Gem is stunning. Liberty's hair is a trifle soft, but the reverse is razor-sharp. An appealing example of this final-year Capped Bust dime. Struck from mildly rotated dies. Census: 5 in 66, 0 finer (10/14), for all 1837 Capped Bust varieties.
Ex: Barney Bluestone, 11/1943, sold for $2.50; John Jay Pittman Collection, Part One (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 577; Los Angeles Signature (Heritage, 8/2009), lot 450; Fort Worth Signature (Heritage, 3/2010), lot 595. (NGC ID# 237H, Variety PCGS# 38894, Base PCGS# 4529)
