Description

1837 JR-4 Capped Bust Dime, MS65+
From the Pittman Collection
CAC Approved

1837 10C JR-4, R.4, MS65+ PCGS. CAC. Ex: Pittman. A bisecting obverse die crack between 12 and 5 o'clock identifies the variety. Frosty luster shines through the beautiful rainbow toning with light silver devices. The obverse has light gold at the centers, changing to deeper gold, violet, russet, and cobalt-blue at the border. Reddish-gold at the central reverse changes to blue-green and gold at the border. The visual effect of the toning on this Premium Gem is stunning, matching its lofty technical merits. Liberty's hair is a trifle soft, but the reverse is razor-sharp. An appealing example of this final-year Capped Bust dime, struck from mildly rotated dies. The former Pittman JR-4 dime was long housed in an NGC MS66 holder, and that former certification number remains on the NGC Census. Population (all varieties included): 9 in 65 (2 in 65+), 3 finer. CAC: 4 in 65, 4 finer (9/25).
