Description

1829 H10C MS64 PCGS. V-13, LM-4, R.3. This is the first year of the Capped Bust design for the denomination, and there are more varieties of this issue than any other through 1837. A total of 18 die varieties are known from six obverse and 10 reverse dies. The LM-4 combination is from an obverse with the ball of the digit 9 doubled. This obverse was also used for LM-3 and LM-9. The reverse has two pale gules in the shield (each vertical shield stripe has two individual lines). The second T of STATES is higher than the adjacent letters, and this characteristic is diagnostic. Splashes of cobalt-blue alternate with gold-brown. The design elements are sharply impressed. A few minute marks on Liberty's cheek do not distract. (Registry values: N1793)
