Fabulous 1829 Half Dime, V-11, LM-9, R.5
MS67 ★ , Likely the Finest Known

1829 H10C MS67 ★ NGC. V-11, LM-9, R.5. This is a very rare die marriage in this condition, and the present piece is almost certainly the finest known. A quick search through our Permanent Auction Archives shows that the finest we have handled previously is an MS62 in the Jules Reiver Collection (Heritage, 1/2006, lot 21969). This piece would certainly top the Condition Census published in the December 2001 John Reich Journal.
On the obverse, the right base of the 1 is close to the 8, and the upper loop of the 8 is close to the 2. The left edge of the 2 is over a space between dentils. The neck of the 2 is not curved. A dentil is centered below the left edge of the upright of the 1. On the reverse, NIT are joined and the D is low. RI are close, and an extra top serif of the C in AMERICA appears between the C and A. The flag of the 5 is halfway under the arrow feather.
This piece has splendid, prooflike original silver-gray fields with radiant luster and lots of eye appeal. There is as yet none of the die chipping that would later afflict the reverse die, in line with the prooflikeness apparent on both sides. The strike is bold, although there is minor softness around the shield border. As a superhigh-grade early Capped Bust half dime and a R.5 die marriage, this piece combines the best of both worlds. Early half dime specialists should take notice of this extraordinary piece.(Registry values: N4719)
