Description

1807 O-112 Capped Bust Half, MS64
Large Stars, 50 Over 20, Colorfully Toned

1807 50C Capped Bust, Large Stars, 50 Over 20, O-112, R.1, MS64 PCGS. Two 1807 Capped Bust half dollar varieties feature the popular 50 over 20 denomination. Both the O-111 and O-112 die pairs employ the blundered reverse die, while the obverses are differentiated by the stubby left foot of 1 in the date seen on O-111 examples. The O-112 has a normal 1 in the date, with both bottom serifs fully formed. The engraver first punched a 2 in place of the 5 at the bottom of the reverse, and then corrected the error, creating the 50 over 20 variety that is now a popular Guide Book type. The bold curve of an underdigit 2 is easily visible beneath the 5 on this well-preserved example.

Lustrous and attractive medium-gold surfaces are framed by bright steel-blue toning along the obverse and reverse borders. This Gem Uncirculated O-112 example shows a few light clash marks on each side, but no other significant marks are evident. This exceptional near-Gem approaches the Condition Census for the O-112 50 over 20 variety. Stephen Herrman lists a handful of MS65 examples that represent some multiple appearances of the few coins known at the MS65 level. This piece was formerly housed in an MS65 NGC holder as part of the fine Joseph C. Thomas Collection. PCGS erroneously displays a different coin on the cert. verification page for this piece.
