Description

Toned AU50 1807 Large Stars Half, O-114

1807 50C Capped Bust, Large Stars AU50 NGC. O-114, R.3. The attribution is easy, aided by the die defect lumps visible beneath the 7 on the obverse and the two lowest arrowheads joined on the reverse. Substantial pewter-gray color on the obverse is accented by deeper peripheral gold with similar color across most of the reverse. Some luster remains visible, but it is subdued by the toning. This is a popular and important Guide Book variety, and the 1807-1808 First Style Capped Bust half dollars are an important two-year subtype, as the portrait and eagle were remodeled with the 1809 coinage.
