Description

1807 Small Stars Half Dollar, MS61
Late Die State O-113a
Diagnostic Die Crack Display

1807 50C Capped Bust, Small Stars MS61 PCGS. O-113a. R.3. Long-time collectors know how hard it is to find this variety in any grade above XF, much less in the frosted Uncirculated, originally toned condition of this appealing coin. Deep blue-gray and russet toning radiates toward the silvery center of the obverse and to a lesser extent on the reverse. Mint luster is present in and around the central devices and is particularly prevalent on the reverse.

The Mint had difficulty providing fully struck examples of John Reich's design. Virtually all examples of the small stars variety are bluntly struck. Some obverse softness of strike is visible on this coin, and the usual weakness on the eagle's head and left wing is seen on the reverse. It is a wonder any strike quality was possible given the late state of the dies for this O-113a variety, characterized by multiple encircling die cracks on the both the obverse and reverse. This is a rare Capped Bust half dollar in Mint State, with just four finer certified by PCGS and none in this grade or finer by NGC (12/13).
