Description
Believed Finest Known O-106 1809 Half, MS65
Ex: Kaufman
1809 50C Normal Edge MS65 NGC. O-106, R.3. The Normal Edge
variant. Since the obverse die used to strike this variety is quite
similar to the O-104 die, it is easiest to attribute O-106 by
observing key characteristics of the reverse die; the N in UNITED
is recut and a long, heavy engraver's scratch extends diagonally
from the right corner of the shield into the eagle's right (facing)
wing. A heavy die break connects all stars on the left side of the
obverse confirming the variety. It was formerly believed that the finest known example of this variety is the Eliasberg specimen--an NGC-certified MS65 coin that was last sold as lot 16 of Bowers and Merena's January 1999 Orlando sale. Steve Herrman's Autumn 2009 edition of Auction Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars lists the Eliasberg piece as "Finest ?" However, in this edition he lists this piece as the number one example.
As with most certified Bust halves, the variety is not noted on the label, therefore the NGC Census Report is of limited use. However, grouping all varieties and edge types together, only eight 1809 halves have been graded at the MS65 level, with just two finer pieces--both graded as MS66 (10/09). Soft rose and golden hues evenly blanket both sides of this lustrous Gem. The strike is bold--for the issue--and the overall eye appeal is memorable.(Registry values: N4719)
