Description

1809 III Edge O-111 Half Dollar, MS64
Lovely, Lustrous, Condition Census Coin

1809 50C Normal Edge, O-111, R.2, MS64 NGC. CAC. This lovely, lustrous coin boasts attractive blue-green rim toning with wine and russet tones moving inward, ceding to pale silver in the centers of each side. The strike and surfaces are both top-notch. The obverse shows a distinctive and diagnostic comma-shaped die mark, sitting boldly on the shoulder drapery of Liberty just to the left of the lowest curl. Light die clashes appear on both sides, yet the dentils are stronger than often seen for the variety, suggesting an early state of the dies. The coin is certified in an old-style NGC "no line fatty" holder. It is almost certainly high in the Condition Census for the variety (whether called O-111 or O-111', the early die state), ranking perhaps as high as second according to the auction records in our latest version of Stephen Herrman's work. The Overton-Parsley fifth edition lists one MS65 as finest in its Condition Census.
