Description

    Attractive 1812/1 Large 8 Half, O-101, VF30

1812/1 50C Large 8 VF30 PCGS. O-101, R.5. Although a die crack is visible from the first 1 through the drapery and stars on the left, this is an early die state that was struck before the obverse die shattered. Two overdate obverse varieties are known, and they are distinguished in the literature as Large 8 and Small 8 overdates. Telling the two varieties apart is more easily accomplished by looking at the second 1 as it relates to the 8. On the Large 8 variety, that digit leans to the left, and its serif points just above the center of the 8. On the Small Date, the second 1 is more upright with the serif pointing to the top half of the upper loop of the 8.
This pleasing pewter gray example has hints of pale blue toning, especially on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth for the grade. It is an especially desirable Choice VF example.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
