Description

1812/1 O-102 Half Dollar, MS65
Small Overdate

1812/1 50C Small 8 MS65 NGC. O-102, R.2. Despite the heavy clash marks over the date and elsewhere, this is an early die state of the Small Overdate variety. Two overdated obverse dies exist, the other one with a Large 8 in the date being an important rarity. The two varieties share a blundered reverse die with the N in UNITED showing a stray serif at the lower right. Overton states it is a recut N while others suggest an inverted N. However, it appears to be the remnant of some other letter. This delightful Gem is fully lustrous beneath light gold toning with considerable peripheral iridescence on the obverse. Census: 1 in 65, 1 finer (3/12).(Registry values: N4719)
