    Description

    1812 Large 8 Half, O-105a, MS63
    Near-Shattered Obverse Die

1812 50C Large 8, O-105a, R.2, MS63 PCGS. The obverse die is virtually shattered, with a wedge-shaped portion -- created by a die crack rising from the rim through the 2 in the date, a second crack meeting it above, running to the 1 and on through the 8, where a lump fills the lower 8, this latter crack running in the other direction to bisect the obverse before meeting other cracks -- seemingly ready to fall out of the die. Extensive die fatigue draws all star points toward the rim. This piece shows moderate luster on sandy-brown surfaces with silvery centers and occasional charcoal accents in the shield on the reverse. The reverse details are weaker than the obverse, which show bold details in the center. Certified in a green-label holder.
Ex: Private purchase from David Lawrence via Sheridan Downey (4/1990).

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
