Description

1814/3 O-101a Half Dollar, MS63
Amazingly Toned and Lustrous

1814/3 50C O-101a, R.2, MS63 PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Friend. The underdigit 3 remains visible beneath 4 in the date, and a pair of large dentils above the second T in STATES confirm the die marriage. Both sides show substantial die cracks and quadruple die clashing to confirm the late O-101a die state. With a mintage exceeding 1 million pieces, eight obverse dies and nine reverses were required, combining for a total of nine 1814 varieties.

The 1814/3 overdate is confined to the O-101 die pair, which is rare in its early state with no obverse die cracks. Later die states (such as this coin) show multiple die clashing, with numerous die cracks. Both the obverse and reverse dies were retired after their sole use striking the O-101 variety. This Select Uncirculated example is exquisitely toned throughout both sides, with golden luster illuminating the stars and legends, flanked by steel-blue shades that surround reddish-brown interiors. All of the stars are pinpoint sharp, with well-struck central motifs despite the late die state. CAC endorsement confirms the high quality and exceptional eye appeal.
