Description

1814 Half Dollar, MS66
O-102a, Among the Finest Known

1814 50C O-102a, R.2, MS66 NGC. The Overton-102 die pair is distinctive for the die lines around the curl above the clasp. This Premium Gem example represents the late die state O-102a, with obvious die sinking on the reverse that effaces significant portions of the eagle's wing and leg feathers on the left (facing) side. On the obverse, the right-side stars are drawn to the edge, and the border dentils are largely absent, as noted in Overton for O-102a. In Stephen Herrman's Condition Census, the present coin is numerically tied with the Pittman-Pogue specimen and the Dale Friend specimen. This is a brightly lustrous Premium Gem, showing vibrant, brilliant luster and astonishingly few marks. Some strike softness is seen on the top of Liberty's cap, as usual.
