Description

1814 XF 45 in a bezel. O-102a, R.3. This deeply toned half was mounted in a bezel that has the edge inscription PRESENTED TO WILLIAM SHERMAN BY HIS FRIENDS MAY 1889. We assume this refers to William Tecumseh Sherman, the Union general who burned a 60-mile swath through Georgia on his march to the sea during the Civil War. We do not know of another significant William Sherman who would have been presented with such an item. However, there are a couple of minor problems with this. William Tecumseh Sherman was born in 1820, not 1814, and the coin date subtracted from the date of presentation, 1889, leaves 75 years--a significant anniversary. But the Union general would have only been 69 years old in 1889 (he died in 1891). But the coin's date may not have any bearing on the bezel or ceremony in May 1889 and may just be an old coin placed in a bezel and presented to the general. The consignor purchased this item many years ago and firmly believes it was presented to General Sherman.
