Description

Elusive 1815/2 Half Dollar
Near-Mint State, O-101a

1815/2 50C AU58 NGC. O-101a, R.3. The late-state-reverse die cracks are on full display on this near-Mint State piece, basically encircling the entire rim in each direction from 6 o'clock. The usual die clashing on this variety is visible on the obverse. Splashes of blue and purple compete with a silver-gold color scheme on this coin, which shows no singular abrasions for the grade but fairly diffuse luster. Nonetheless this piece is an in-demand specimen as the only variety for the year; a meager 47,150 pieces were coined, and none in the following year, 1816. The last AU58 example we know of, a PCGS example, sold in a Stack's auction a couple of years ago for $14,950. An important opportunity for Bust half collectors.(Registry values: N2998)
