1815/2 Half Dollar, O-101
Condition Census, MS63
1815/2 50C MS63 NGC. O-101, R.2. With an estimated mintage
of 47,150 pieces, the 1815/2 Capped Bust half dollar has long been
known as the "Queen" of the series. Only one die variety is known
for the date, and the issue is avidly pursued by Bust half
specialists. The overdate was created when silver deposits resumed
after the War of 1812. An unused obverse die from 1812 was taken
out of storage, and a 5 was punched in over the final digit in the
date to create the new die. As a date, the 1815/2 half dollar was
quite popular with collectors, but early catalogers did not notice
the overdate in their descriptions. For example, in the Sixth
Semi-Annual Sale (Woodward, 3/1865), lot 1556, the description
reads, "1815 Splendid specimen, rarely seen so fine, being scarcely
touched by circulation, scarce." The lot realized $3.00 to
"French," the enigmatic gentleman who bought the 1861 Paquet
Reverse double eagle in the same sale.The present coin is a well preserved and attractive specimen, struck from misaligned dies. The strike is quite sharp on the left side and the central details are crisp, but there is noticeable softness on the right-side stars and the corresponding area on the reverse. The coin is from an early die state, with multiple clash marks evident in the fields and vertical bars detected below the ear. Even shades of reddish-golden color enhance the surfaces. While population data may be skewed by resubmissions, coins at the MS63 level are rare. The coin offered here is tied for fourth place in Stephen Herrman's Condition Census for the date. Census: 6 in 63, 10 finer (4/09).
