1815/2 Half Dollar, O-101, AU55
Beautiful Color, Gold CAC

1815/2 50C O-101, R.2, AU55 NGC. Gold CAC. The British invasion and destruction of Washington, D.C. in 1814 had a devastating psychological and financial effect on commerce and banking. One ramification was the Philadelphia Mint received virtually no silver deposits throughout 1814 and 1815, and the coining presses sat unused for any mintage of half dollars, which were the staple of the banking industry. Finally, near the end of 1815 enough silver was on hand for a small mintage and an 1812 die was repurposed for resumption of half dollar coinage. Just 47,150 pieces were struck -- all with the 1815/2 overdate. Shortly after delivery, the Mint burned and no more half dollars were struck until 1817.

It is challenging to find an 1815/2 half dollar with any degree of eye appeal. They are by and large a dull lot, and many of the surviving pieces are impaired in one way or another. The present coin is a wonderful exception. Originally toned in attractive blue, violet, and tangerine-gold toning, both sides are brightly lustrous and sharply struck. Aside from the inevitable die clashing, there are no marks of consequence. Housed in an early generation NGC holder from about 25 years ago (with hologram but without the barcode), this Choice About Uncirculated coin carries the CAC gold sticker indicating it is undergraded by at least one level. Census: 18 in 55, 58 finer. Gold CAC: 1 in 55, 0 finer (6/16).
