Description

1815/2 Capped Bust Half Dollar, O-101a, VF Details
Key Issue, Later Die State

1815/2 50C O-101a, R.3 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. VF. Only 47,150 Capped Bust half dollars were struck in 1815, all from an unused 1812-dated die that was modified by a 5 punched over the last digit of the date. This bluish-gray example has the diagnostic die cracks indicative of the later die state for this key date in the series. Somewhat subdued from an old cleaning, this piece displays few abrasions or other distractions beyond the usual clash marks.
From the Collection of Donald E. Bently, sold for the benefit of the Bently Foundation.
