Description

1815/2 O-101a Half Dollar, XF40
Date Set Necessity, Sole Dies for Type

1815/2 50C O-101a, R.3, XF40 PCGS. Traces of remaining silver luster intersperse with areas of powder-gray toning on this crisply struck 1815/2 half. Struck from a late state of the dies, several diagnostic cracks surround the reverse legends. Die clashing appears on both sides in the O-101a die stage. This example is attractive with sharp eye appeal for the XF40 level. Bold definition remains on the obverse devices with only light rub visible on Liberty's cheek, along with visible wear on the eagle's head, neck, and left (facing) wing shoulder. Only three denominations were struck dated 1815 at the Mint: quarters, half dollars, and half eagles, of which only quarters and half dollars are available to date collectors given the extreme rarity of the half eagles.
