Description
1817 Contemporary Counterfeit. Heavily worn with the detail of a VG coin, this piece could never fool anyone familiar with coins and their collecting. However, the general public is apparently far less discriminating as evidenced by the extensive circulation this piece saw. The facial features of Liberty are quite unlike a legitimate coin and the style of the 7 is unlike any used at the time. There are several shallow obverse scratches, two of which form an X, and there are three planchet flaws also seen on that side.
