Description

Bold Near-Gem O-104a 1818 Half

1818 50C MS64 NGC. O-104a, R.3. Several stages of obverse die cracks are known for this die marriage, with the O-104a die state slightly more plentiful than the prime or O-104b die states. The lower left portion of the obverse die is shattered on this die state, with cracks through the date and bust. One crack crosses the drapery and bust on its way to stars 3 and 4. Another crack extends upward to the border above star 7. The obverse border of this near-Gem specimen is wider at the upper right, while the reverse is properly centered. Among the finest examples of its die marriage, the present near-Gem has vibrant luster, a bold strike, and dappled autumn-gold and steel-blue toning.
