Description
1818 O-104 Half Dollar, MS62
Rare Perfect Die State
Possibly Finest Known
1818 50C O-104, R.6, MS62 PCGS. BHNC Die State 104.1. This
is the rare early die state without the network of prominent
obverse cracks. The Herrman Census lists a single MS63 piece finer
than this coin, but this one is tied with another MS62 for second
finest. However, it should be noted that both of those other Mint
State pieces were raw at their last auction appearance, making the
current coin the only Mint State O-104 piece in a grading service
holder. This piece enjoys a razor-sharp strike and no trace of die erosion or breakage. Brilliant luster is somewhat satiny, as the dies had not yet been broken in when this piece was struck. While finer examples of the die pair are known in the later O-104a die state, this piece being one of the finest of the prime die state is uniquely appealing and important, and should excite Bust half specialists of all degrees.
