Description

1822 O-105a Half, MS64
Important Late Die State

1822 50C MS64 PCGS. O-105a, R.3. The fourth edition of the Overton reference introduced a new die state, O-105a, with all of the stars on the right flatly struck, but with no mention of an obverse die crack. This example has the stars on the right sharply defined, but also has a crack through all the stars on the right, from the back of the cap down to the border right of the date. The reverse has the usual crack through the legend.
This Choice Mint State piece is far finer than any others known with the obverse die crack, and it would be a census level specimen even without the crack. Both sides are fully lustrous and sharply defined, with mirrored fields beneath splendid gold and iridescent toning. An extremely important opportunity for the specialist, and possibly R.7 in this die state.(Registry values: N2998)
