Description

1822 Half, Richly Toned MS66, O-106

1822 50C MS66 NGC. O-106, R.3. This spectacular Capped Bust half dollar gives us sufficient reason to call it one of the first impressions with this die pair. The devices display razor-sharp, if not full striking definition over nearly every feature. There are also several die scratches (as produced) along the obverse rim below star 13. Overton does not mention these scratches in his book, so it is likely that they were polished away in middle and later die states. In addition, the lower base of the second 2 in the date is heavy and recut. This feature probably also faded with subsequent impressions. There is a hairline-thin mark in the lower obverse field before the date, but the balance of the surfaces are all but abrasion-free, with a crisp, frosty sheen. A rich overlay of crimson-copper and cobalt-blue toning rounds out this coin's list of positive attributes. Census: 8 in 66, 1 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N4719)
