Description
1822 Capped Bust Half, MS65
Elusive O-113 Variety
Tied for Finest Certified
1822 50C O-113, R.3, MS65 PCGS. The diagnostics for O-113
include the bases of R and I in AMERICA nearly touching, the base
of R higher than I. M and E also nearly touch at their bases. The A
in STATES is rotated counterclockwise, and it is missing its inside
right serif (as is the final A in AMERICA). Early die state
examples such as this coin show a group of parallel die lines
around the bust drapery, and extensions from the left-most pair of
olive leaves toward the dentils. This mostly brilliant, frosted Gem displays gold and pale-blue overtones amid pearlescent mint luster. Sharply struck and free of any marks to note, the coin is tied at the top of the Condition Census for the O-113 variety. The last time we sold an 1822 MS65 O-113 was in 1997, which is also the most recent sale of an MS65 in Steve Herrman's Autumn 2019 listing for the O-113. The present coin is housed in an early blue-label holder with barcode on the back.
