    Description

1822 50C VF30 NGC. O-108a, R.3. Star seven of this obverse gently touches the front of the liberty cap, as opposed to the O-109, where it appears imbedded in the cap. The reverse of this variety has an extra horizontal line on the left (facing) under the bottom shield crossbar, which then turns downward to become an extra rightmost line in the first set of vertical stripes. The present specimen is medium-gray, with few mentionable problems aside from circulation wear. This coin has all the characteristics present that Overton mentions of the O-108a. An obverse die crack joins stars 10 through 12 with the date and drapery. A reverse crack through CA and 50 C. to join a second crack from the rim to the left claw. A third crack joins the olive leaves with the base of UNITED and runs upward through STA to the rim. A die chip fills the top of N.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
