    1823 O-101 Broken 3 Half, MS66 ★
    Easily the Finest Known

1823 50C Broken 3 MS66 ★ NGC. CAC. O-101, R.3. Doubled profile. This example is an early die state, while later states of the die pair have the 3 patched, one of few instances where die states are collected as separate varieties. Several variations are known to the 3 on the 1823 half dollars, described as Broken, Patched, and Ugly. There are 13 documented die marriages for the date, produced from 11 obverse and 12 reverse dies. The recorded mintage totaled 1,694,200 coins.
Many words have been written to explain the Broken 3 variety. Overton suggested that the 3 punch was unsuitable and that the top of an older 2 was punched twice to create a makeshift 3. Others have suggested that an inexperienced apprentice created the poorly formed 3 via hand-engraving. Those theories have been disproven. In Bust Half Fever, Edgar Souders explains the use of a new punch for the digit:

"The Broken 3 obverse die was created through the use of the new 3 punch which was simply a very unfinished numeral that, at first use, was probably believed to be a good enough representation."

A great condition rarity, the 1823 Broken 3 half dollar is extremely rare in high grades. The only Gem offered in past sales appeared 30 years ago in Auction '83. The Queller Collection had an MS63, and all other auction appearances are in lower grades.
This amazing Premium Gem has old album toning that features light olive-gold at the center, with rings of violet, blue, amber, and rose near the borders. It is an incredible specimen destined for an advanced Bust half dollar collection.(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 24FJ, PCGS# 6132)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
