Description

1823 Broken 3 Half Dollar, O-101
Choice About Uncirculated

1823 50C Broken 3, O-101, R.3, AU55 PCGS. Laid on its backside, the Broken 3 looks like a poorly trimmed handlebar moustache. The 3 does, in fact, lean right as if it will fall over, and the top and bottom loops appear disconnected. It is the early die state of O-101, before the engraver attempted an awkward patch. This Choice About Uncirculated coin displays warm-gray surfaces with a hint of soft luster. A few light lines in the left obverse field are noted, with the stars mostly flat but the central motifs bolder. A significant Guide Book variety, scarcer than the Patched 3 or Ugly 3 varieties. Population: 9 in 55, 15 finer (5/17).
