Description

1823 O-101 Half Dollar, AU58
'Broken 3'
Guide Book Variety

1823 50C Broken 3, O-101, R.3, AU58 PCGS. The Mint never quite solved its problems with the 3 punch for the 1823 varieties, although numerous fixes were made. The best solution seemed to be "wait until 1824," although that year had date punch issues as well. Three significant Guide Book varieties include the Broken 3 (O-101), the Patched 3 (O-101a and O-102), and the Ugly 3 (O-110a). The Reworked 3 (O-109) may someday make the list as well. As it is, the Broken 3 started it all, and this is an attractive near-Mint example of the disjointed 3. Intense cobalt-blue and aquamarine toning at the borders yields to peach-gold and silver centers. Marks are few and the eye appeal is strong.
