Description

1823 O-113 Half Dollar, VG8
One of Only 14 Examples Known

1823 50C O-113, High R.6, VG8 PCGS. BHNC Die State 113.1, the only known die state. Overton-113 is the only truly rare die marriage of 1823 and ranks among the most challenging marriages of the entire Capped Bust series. The position of Stars 7 and 8 are key to confirming the variety, sitting closer to the cap than any other 1823 variety. On the reverse, 50 and C. are more widely spaced than any other 1823 reverse.

The latest report from Steve Herrman (Autumn, 2025) suggests that only 14 examples of the very rare O-113 are known. This is a solid VG8 example -- smoothly worn, with pleasing lilac-gray patina and strong rims for the assigned grade. The devices show considerable wear but are fully outlined and problem-free. We note some short, minor abrasions in the left obverse field and an old scratch from the back of the cap toward star 9.
