Description

    1823 'Ugly 3' Capped Bust Half, AU55

1823 50C Ugly 3 AU55 PCGS. O-110a, R.3. A popular Guide Book variety often confused with the similar Patched 3 (O-101a and O-102). Called the "Ugly 3 variety" because of the die crack that extends from the rim to the right side of the 3 in the date, causing the 3 to be "rough and ill shaped" (according to Overton). A reverse die crack runs through the olive leaves, enters the lower part of the eagle's right (left facing) wing, and exits above before fading out to the left of the eagle's beak. A second crack runs down from the eagle's left wing through the arrowheads and 50 C before it terminates at the rim. This Choice AU piece retains significant luster, and displays mottled russet-orange and electric-turquoise toning on both sides. Typically worn and lightly marked for the grade.

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
