Gem 1823 O-110a Ugly 3 Half Dollar1823 50C Ugly 3 MS65 NGC. O-110a, R.3. Called the "Ugly 3 variety" because of the mint repair on the middle of the 3 in the date. A reverse die crack runs through the olive leaves, enters the lower part of the eagle's right (left facing) wing, and exits above before fading out. A second crack runs down from the eagle's left wing through the arrowheads and 50 C before it terminates at the rim. This Gem example displays bright luster and delicate lavender and gold-tan peripheral toning. Well centered design elements are crisply impressed, save for the star centers at the upper left border. A couple of minor obverse handling marks do not distract. Overall, a very pleasing Capped Bust half dollar. (NGC ID# 24FJ, PCGS# 6134)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.
This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
