Description

Gem 1828 Curl Base, Knob 2 Half
O-106, Possible Finest Known

1828 50C Curl Base 2, Knob MS65 PCGS. CAC. O-106, R.4. The Curled Base, Knob 2 in the date narrows down the choices to two similar obverse dies sharing the same reverse, O-106 and O-107. The O-106, as here, is far more elusive ("very scarce" overall), showing a point of star 13 aiming at a gap between two dentils, and star 8 to the upper edge of a dentil. Rich mint luster encompasses both sides of this appealing Gem, copper, crimson, and pinkish tones blending to beautiful effect. This piece appears finer by two points than the highest-graded in our Stephen Herrman from spring 2012. This same piece is depicted on PCGS CoinFacts, providing further confirmation. For the Curl Base, Knob 2, Population: 1 in 65, 0 finer (2/13).
